Quantum invariants of 3-manifolds and TQFTs I : construction

I will explain how certain types of categories give rise to invariants of 3-manifolds, both closed (scalar invariants) and with boundaries (TQFTs). More precisely, spherical categories give rise to the Turaev-Viro invariants, which are achiral, and modular categories, to the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants, which are chiral. I will also explain how the modularity condition can be relaxed, based on Mickael Lallouche's thesis.
